Governor Brownback has signed a bill into law that includes a school choice program which will be the first of its kind in Kansas.
The “Tax Credit for Low Income Students Scholarship Program” will empower low-income families to choose a private education that they might not otherwise have been able to afford.
Under the program, corporations will be able to donate private funds to nonprofit scholarship-granting organizations. Those scholarship-granting organizations will provide scholarships to children from low-income families, which can be used towards private school tuition. The donor corporation will receive a tax credit for its contribution. No taxpayer dollars go to the private school, the scholarships are financed by private funds.
